RULES OF PICKLEBALL
The Pickleball Court
Dimensions: 20 ft × 44 ft for singles and doubles
Kitchen: The non-volley zone extends 7 ft from the net on each side
Net Height: 36 in at the sidelines, 34 in at the center.
Tip: Stay out of the “kitchen” when volleying — it’s one of the most common beginner mistakes!
Player Positioning in Pickleball
- Serving team switches sides after scoring a point.
- Receiving team stays in position until they regain serve.
- Partners alternate sides throughout the game.
How to Serve in Pickleball
- Serve underhand, paddle below the waist.
- Keep one foot behind the baseline.
- Serve diagonally across the court and beyond the kitchen line
- Only one serve attempt is allowed (except for a “let” serve).
Bonus: A “let” serve that hits the net but lands correctly is replayed — no penalty.
The Serve Sequence in Pickleball
- In doubles, both partners serve before the ball goes to the other team.
- The first server of the game serves only once
- The score determines the side:
- Even score → serve from the right.
- Odd score → serve from the left.
The Double-Bounce Rule in Pickleball
- The ball must bounce once on each side before volleys begin
- Serve → must bounce once.
- Return → must bounce once.
- After that, hit it in the air or off the bounce — your choice.
This keeps rallies fair and prevents “smash” serves.
Scoring in Pickleball
- Only the serving team can score points.
- Games are typically to 11 points, win by 2.
- Tournament games may go to 15 or 21, still win by 2.
Scoring example: “4–2–1” = 4 (your score), 2 (opponent’s), 1 (server number).
Common Faults in Pickleball
A rally ends when any fault occurs:
- Hitting the ball out of bounds
- The ball doesn’t clear the net
- Volleying in the kitchen
- Breaking the double-bounce rule
Lets & Replays in Pickleball
- Let serve: Hits the net but lands in the correct box → replay.
- Distraction or interference: Replay the rally.
- Unclear line call: Replay the point — fair play first.
Line Calls & Etiquette in Pickleball
- A ball touching any line (except kitchen line on a serve) is in.
- Players are expected to make honest calls.
- Show sportsmanship — respect your opponents, play fair, and have fun!
